What happens when you walk downstairs one morning and suddenly you realize all your valuable possessions are missing? Or worse, someone could attack a member of your family, especially if they walked downstairs while a burglary was taking place and the intruder was disturbed. You might think things like that only happen it Hollywood movies, but pick up the newspaper every day this week and you will find out it happens to more people than you think.

Giving someone the chance to turn your life upside down seems crazy and that is what most people are doing. That doesn’t mean they do it intentionally, but it is what it is. If you don’t protect your home from that sort of danger you can’t be surprised when scum decides to pay your home a visit. You can’t stop anyone from getting inside because anyone could get in if they really wanted to, but you can do a few things we’re going to discuss now which will keep out nearly everyone.

Close your curtains

Nobody likes the unknown and they don’t want to chance anything. When someone walks past your home and they see all the lights off they won’t know what awaits them. What possible reason could they have for coming inside? Maybe you don’t have any nice stuff and risking jail on a hunch is silly. They will probably go and find someone who doesn’t close their curtains so they can see what is inside and how easily it will be to enter.

Give them an invitation

I know the world is running out of metal and soon there will be none left, but I bet you one hundred dollars your blacksmith still has enough to cut you a second or third key. It’s got to be much safer than leaving the only one you have under the most obvious rock at the front of the house. Common sense would tell you at the very least to leave it with a neighbor and you should start doing it because I don’t want you finding out the hard way just how silly leaving it under a rock is.

Installing an alarm system

An alarm system will work better than anything else except it only works once someone has already decided to break in. You might have a damaged door or a broken window, but at least as soon as the alarm starts ringing they should turn around and sprint away from your home as fast as they can. Even a simple alarm system will do the trick and you don’t need to go spending all your savings on one. It’s a last line of defense you really should have.

Brighten the place up

If you want something that will scare someone away before they get a chance to break any of your windows, you won’t go wrong hanging some motion detecting lights on the side of your home. There are not a lot of people who are stupid enough to try breaking into somewhere that is lighten up like a Christmas tree. Even if they do try and come in there is a better chance one of your neighbors will see them and they can call the police.

Plant some trees and bushes

If your garden is open it’s easy for someone to see your home when walking past. They might notice that the lights are off and if this is the case for a few days they can only assume you are on holiday and the house is nice and empty. If you plant trees and bushes around the outside of your home it means people will have a hard time noticing your lighting arrangements without specifically checking. It’s an easy way to stop opportunistic burglars who are looking for easy targets that are not home.

Have a Plan and Stick to It

Planning is one of the best ways to accomplish anything. If you have what feels like a million things to do and no organizations tool such as: sticky notes, a to-do list or other system to stay on track, it becomes very easy for things to be missed.

Scheduling

One idea that may work for your family or office is to create a daily cleaning schedule. This can work for a single person or for a group of individuals. You can either choose to assign certain tasks to the same people across the board or maybe switch up cleaning projects depending on the day of the week, making them feel less monotonous. Some things may need to be done at certain times (sterilizing a coffee machine at the beginning of the day), or certain days of the week (cleaning out the fridge, so the contents will be taken out on trash pick-up day).

Track What’s Completed and By Who

Highlighting projects as they are completed, erasing them from a chalk or whiteboard are just a few ways to make sure everyone knows who has completed their specified jobs and who has yet to do so. This would be a great opportunity to take a closer look at who is doing what and possibly making changes to the plan, offering those with harder assignments a handful of simpler tasks instead, so they have enough time in the day to get everything done.

See the Area through Others’ Eyes

This can be a lot easier said than done, and takes practice but every time you walk into your office, business, or home, scan the entire area. Takes notes (either mental or physical), starting from what you see as you walk up to the building or room and what you see when you step inside. Doing this on a regular basis is going to help you catch things that someone who is present daily (you, family members or even employees) may not typically notice.

Commonly Missed Tasks

Especially when you’re in an area much of the time, it becomes very easy to bypass what may be ‘obvious’ to others. For example, many individuals will forget to sweep under tables, near chairs or wipe counters that are not used as often. Ceiling fans and walls are also commonly forgotten because they slowly become dirty over time. These are areas that you may want to have on a ‘weekly cleaning list’, rather than your ‘daily chore list’.

A lot of the time, when distracted by something or someone unexpected, an entire day can be ‘thrown off’ and without the proper plan and walk-through, you may not notice these types of things. Set yourself up for success and you are going to achieve much more than if you approach the situation without properly coordinate responsibilities.

Busy Schedules Don’t Have to Get in the Way

Lead a busy life? Many people do and that doesn’t necessarily have to affect how well you can clean and your ability to accomplish all of your daily tasks. Hiring a professional cleaning company or individual is an option many people are turning to these days. Trusting someone to come into your home (or business), especially when you are away makes many first-time customers uneasy but it doesn’t have to.

Not all companies will be but it never hurts to check to see as you learn more about your potential future choices. The same also goes for insurance and they need to be insured before you can even let them touch a light switch. Try to imagine how the conversation would go if you phoned your insurance company and told them the house burned down and the guy working on it wasn’t insured.

What is their specialization?

It doesn’t make sense to hire someone to convert your attic if they have never done it before. Maybe they specialize in something else. Someone could be a jack of all trades, but at the end of the day they will never be able to do the job better than someone with hundreds of hours experience carrying out the specific job you want done. It shouldn’t be too hard to find out what they specialize in if you phone around and ask them. If someone tells you they specialize in everything then put down the phone.

Who will do the work?

You might meet someone and absolutely love them because they’re a nice person. Then suddenly you get all these strange people coming into your home. When you speak to anyone there is a good chance it will be the main boss because they will deal with the quotes, but that doesn’t mean they will be there to carry out the work. It’s possible they could even contract the work out to a different company, so before you go ahead and hire someone find out who is doing the actual work.

Speak to people you know

It’s sometimes worthwhile speaking to people you know and asking them if they can recommend someone. Most people will use a local firm and there are not many that cover any great distance. That means because everyone works in the same area you should find someone who has done a great job before. Going on a recommendation from a friend or neighbor is a lot safer than taking a stab in the dark. You also have a good idea of what they might charge for a similar job.

How much do you want to spend?

Deciding how much money you can afford to spend is a big deal because you can’t spend anything you don’t have. Once you know what is available you can go around asking some good companies for quotes. The reason you want to decide on your limit first is because when you have the quotes in front of you it might be tempting to spend a little more. With a figure in your head you can reject any quote that are above it, or at least try to negotiate.

How Choosing The Right Windows Can Transform Your Rooms

If your room is looking tired or dingy and you don’t know what to do about it, then you might want to consider looking into your windows. Windows are unique in that they are the only part of your home that can affect the appearance of the interior and exterior, but they have a particularly huge impact on your rooms doing a lot more to affect their appearance and functionality than you might think. Here we will look at how changing your windows can transform an entire room.

Light

The first role of a window is of course to let light in, and without windows a room will instantly seem much smaller and darker. As such then it stands to reason that a window that let more light in would be a better window and if you can do this you’ll make your rooms look larger, cleaner and more pleasant to spend time in.

So how do you increase the amount of light your window lets in? Well the first thing to consider of course is simply making the window larger or adding another new window to a different wall. This will instantly mean more light comes into your room though of course it will also take up more space meaning that you can fit less furniture into the room. Adding a mirror is a cheaper alternative.

The kind of window can also alter how much light it lets in. Think about the patterns on the window and whether or not they are in fact blocking light, and meanwhile make sure that you use double glazing so that you don’t end up with condensation creating distortion.

Finally decorating your window is also important. Net curtains are great for added privacy, but they also block light making your room look less tidy. Similarly if you have a lot of clutter on your windowsill this will block your light from getting in – so think minimal and recognize that less is usually more here.

Functionality

Windows also serve a number of functions that should make your rooms more pleasant to be in and create more uses for them. For instance your window should be able to insulate your room well so that you save heating, but by having more options in how far it opens you can this way have a finer control over the precise temperature. Make sure you use double glazing, and look into different hinges and opening mechanisms.

Likewise, while you will want light to come into your room most of the time, you will also want to be able to shut it out for sleeping or just relaxing, and you’ll want to be able to get privacy. Look into using curtains that will be efficient at blocking out the light only when you want them too, and consider extra features such as shades or shutters to add privacy and darkness when you want it, or filters to keep off the rain/prevent glare.

There are many other factors here to consider too, for instance the location of the window can affect how much light shines in (avoid streetlamps if you intend on sleeping in the room) as well as the layout combinations you’ll have available inside the room.

The first thing you can do to get more from your home is to try making changes to the layout and look of it in order to make it more ‘yours’. Another big thing you can do with a property is to have a party and invite lots of people around. Rent Out a Room

A property isn’t just something you use, it’s also a great investment and should be a money making opportunity. Of course you’ll make money when you sell up, but you should take full advantage of it by making some extra cash while you live there too by having a lodger in one of your rooms. When you offset this against your mortgage this can actually be cheaper on a day-to-day basis than renting a property would be even.

The Type of Home Insurance You Choose Makes a Big Difference

There are a wide range of different home insurance, not only companies, but policies within those companies that we each have to choose from. Many people are not aware just how many different options they have and today we are going to break down a few of what we would call the ‘most important’. At the end of the day, what is truly most important depends on what your needs are so be sure to ask your representative as many questions as you feel necessary in order to make sure your coverage is just right for your unique situation. Also keep in mind, titles for different types of coverage may vary between companies. We are using the simplest titles in order to better explain each type of policy on a general basis.

Homeowner’s Insurance (HO1): The Most Basic Type of Coverage

This is the most basic of insurance policies for a single home. At least one person inside a single home must have HO1 to cover things such as natural disaster protection, for things such as fire and storm protection. This type of policy is typically also going to include theft and vandalism, as well. This type of policy is not going to typically include liability insurance so any accidents on the premises are not going to be covered. This type of coverage is not enough for a home that is still being paid off.

HO2: A Little More to Work with

If you feel that HO1 isn’t enough protection for you and are looking for coverage that includes not only your home itself but also other structures on your property, such as that new fence you just built, or your favorite tool shed, then HO2 may be more up your alley. (HO2 includes all of HO1). What types of ‘perils’ are covered depends on your insurance company but typically you’ll have things included on your policy, such as: ‘freezing’ and ‘falling objects’. It is always important to read the fine print and never assume exactly what each peril means. Sometimes how something happens to your home is more important than what happened.

HO3: Getting Even More Specific

HO3 is a nice policy to have because it literally protects you against anything and everything out there, unless said peril is mentioned in the policy as being excluded. This gives much more peace of mind, knowing exactly, without a doubt, what you are looking at. HO3 is like a super HO1 and HO2 combination.

HO4: Renters Insurance; Protecting What You Have

Renters Insurance is important because sometimes a landlord will have their property covered, but this does not do anything for your personal items. Another reason renters insurance is so important is because it offers you liability, for yourself and for others on your property so if anything were to happen in (or around) your home; you won’t have to stress over medical bills and lawsuits.

HO5: The Best of the Best

If you have the money to spend and are looking for a hassle-free insurance policy then HO5 is your best bet. It is similar to HO3 in that only things listed are not covered but it generally is going to have a much broader and extensive coverage.

HO6: Condominiums Only

HO6 is a policy in which condominium owners are covered. This type of coverage is similar to renters insurance in the fact that it is a more specific way to insure your property based on the type of dwelling it is.

HO8: Great for Older Homes

HO8 is a type of insurance that is specifically designed to insure homes that are already owned and getting on in their years. If you have an older home and the replacement cost is much higher than the market value, then this is going to be the perfect type of insurance for you and your family.

Seal around the windows with proper moldings and sealants

Changing the situation with your windows can make a big difference in the energy efficiency of your home.

The Filter

Many people make a big mistake when they forget to replace the filter in their air conditioner return. The problem is, when that filter gets clogged up with dust and other particles from the air, it will affect the air conditioner in a couple of ways. For one, the clogged filter will cause the air conditioner to have to work harder just to keep the home cool and that will cost you more money. Additionally, if the filter gets too clogged, it can freeze up the air conditioner and can cause damage to it that you will have to get repaired.

Not many people go through the whole process of buying a home somewhere and turning it into a lovely new home before they decide it’s not right for them, but it does happen. That’s why you need to think really carefully about what you want right down to the specific details. Sometimes you’ll be shown a few homes and will instantly fall in love with one of them. The last thing you want to do is jump right in with both feet. Make sure you answer all of these questions before signing anything.

Know the location

Even if your new home was going to be the nicest one ever built by a home builder you wouldn’t want to buy it if it happened to be in the roughest neighborhood on the planet. You would have to wear a bulletproof vest to walk to the shops and a helmet to get into your car every morning. Maybe you think that’s a bit extreme, but if your new home is next to a drug den you won’t want to leave the house because of the strange people walking about at all times of the night.

Can it be made bigger?

One day you might wake up and realize your home isn’t big enough. Perhaps you have more children and need an extra room, or you might just fancy having a spare room to use as a gym. It’s going to be very hard if the house can’t be made bigger. Check the attic, basement, and garage to see if those could eventually be turned into rooms and check around the perimeter of the house to see if an extension could be build onto the side.

Insect infestations

You should find out whether it has an insect problem before you decide to buy. Should you need to get an exterminator it could end up costing you thousands of dollars before you’ve even unpacked. It could also be another problem with an animal that’s a lot bigger than an insect. The easiest way to deal with this is to look for another house which isn’t overrun by horrible eight-legged creatures.

The overall style

You will probably have plans about what your dream home looks like. You could want an en-suite bathroom in the master bedroom, or possibly a dining room that backs onto the kitchen. When you look at houses and some don’t have these features you need to ask yourself whether they are right. Somewhere down the line you might want that bathroom of your own and it won’t be possible unless you move house.

Plumbing and electricity

This is something else that could cost you plenty of money when something goes wrong and it’s the most annoying thing in the world. You really have no idea who done the previous work and you can’t trust it to be fine. It’s a mistake that’s cost others in the past. Get someone in to look over everything and don’t care that it costs you a little money. In the long run it could be money well spent.
