No more roommates. You finally have a place to call home. The apartment is perfect and the budget has no room for error. Time is ticking. In a few short weeks, family and friends will be knocking on the door for coffee and drinks to check out your new place. Home furnishings can be costly and decorating styles can change faster than your budget. So how does one keep up? Here are three simple tips to keep your new home always looking trendy on any budget with new, repurposed, and vintage pieces.

1. A Splash of Color and A Comfy Sofa

The perfect paint color sets the mood for any room. In order to retain the flexibility of changing styles on a fixed budget, paint your unit a cool light gray throughout. The beauty of a natural gray stone is that it pairs well with sunlight or candlelight and creates a warm relaxing atmosphere.

Colorful Living Room Couch

This tufted gray velour condo size sofa is just a few shades darker than the wall – a perfect match! The high back and scooped arms adds contrast to any space. For the best value, be sure to purchase the sofa bed – make room for that surprise overnight guest. For extra seating, add one or two chairs and remember they don’t have to match. And, if space is limited, consider purchasing the matching ottoman to use as storage, seating or a coffee table by adding a custom piece of glass for the top and caster wheels for functionality.

2. Accents and Accessories

Whether you have a small or large small apartment, create height, dimension, and balance to any room with, a tall plant, a vintage floor lamp, an oversize decorative mirror, and a signature piece of wall art that ties it all together. Baskets, picture frames, candles, and pottery can be easily interchanged to recreate a freshly decorated look anytime. Have fun, mix and match throws and cushions with playful colors, shapes, and patterns. Typically, these accent pieces can be purchased for a ‘reasonable price’. For the finishing touch, hang white sheers which add elegance and softness to any room and compliment with glass or silver accessories for sparkle and flare.

3. Vintage Bedroom

Vintage Bedroom

After all that unpacking, a good night’s rest will be the one thing that matters the most. Take the time and invest in a comfortable mattress and fresh cotton linens. You may want to consider refinishing or repainting that old dresser and change the hardware to give the old a fresh new look, at minimal cost. Place a small round night table by the bed, a glass lamp, and a plush area rug for your feet – for first thing in the morning. Source a large wicker basket, it makes the perfect laundry hamper. With the small space remaining, consider adding a desk, corner bookshelf, and chair by the window for those long nights working from your new home.

Maximize Small Spaces

Either by choice or because of financial constraints, it’s common for many people to settle into smaller floorplans, whether it’s a house out in the open country or a downtown studio apartment. Trying to furnish a small space, however, can bring its own set of challenges. It’s all too easy to go overboard and overwhelm your living quarters with clutter. But cozy doesn’t have to mean cramped. With a little ingenuity, you can transform your space into a comfortable area that doesn’t look or feel too tight. What are some things you can do to maximize your available space?

1. Opt for versatile, multi-functional pieces

When space is at a premium, it helps to think outside of the box in terms of how functional your furnishings are. Why buy two items that only serve one purpose each when you can buy one item that can serve multiple purposes and save space? Research online to gather some ideas for pieces that fit more function into less space.

Some popular multipurpose item ideas include:

  • Sofas that fold out to reveal a bed, or Murphy beds (bonus points if you can also pull out something like a desk).
  • Creatively-used bookshelves that can showcase and store other items like trophies or family pictures.
  • Ottomans that also provide hidden storage space.

2. Use proportionally-sized furniture

The same large sofa sectional that might look good in a spacious living room might eat up the space in your studio apartment. It’s better to go for smaller pieces that fit the scale of your space. Seeking out “apartment-style” furniture pieces that feature slimmer design profiles is a good choice. If you still want to show off a few larger items, make sure that whatever you incorporate makes efficient use of space.

3. Use mirrors, light, and color to your advantage

It’s an old trick, but one that’s still widely used simply because it works. Mirrors do a great job of giving the illusion that a room is larger than it actually is. Pro tip: place a large mirror opposite a window to diffuse natural light and open up your space even more. If you have control over a room’s color scheme, choose lighter tones for walls, which make a space appear larger – white and soft neutral colors would be the safest option. However, darker floors and well-thought-out accent colors can really make a space pop.

4. Go vertical

It’s easy to forget that the square footage of a place isn’t just what your feet touch – your workable space stretches all the way to the ceiling. Incorporate the third dimension into your design plans and take advantage of your room’s vertical space. Extend things like cabinets and bookshelves all the way to the ceiling to maximize available storage space and give the illusion of a larger room. See if it’s also possible to mount larger items (like a TV or sports equipment like a bicycle) on the wall to free up floor space.

5. Use creative storage options

Perhaps one of the best ways to maximize the space you have is to be smart about how you set up storage areas. Make use of any easily accessible space under beds, sofas, or other furniture pieces. Or, as mentioned earlier, pick up functional pieces like ottomans that can also provide additional storage. This helps reduce visible clutter (a messy room looks more cramped) and utilizes space that might otherwise be unusable.

Living in a small space doesn’t have to be restrictive; it simply requires more thoughtful planning and a creative approach. When done right, you can turn your small room/apartment into a comfortable, functional dwelling that’s big on style and create a space that you and your guests can enjoy for a long time to come.

And how often have we struggled to make our homes presentable and appealing for these guests? You have cleaned every single room, top to bottom, rearranged furniture and even swapped old photos for new ones in the photo frames in the living room. Yet, there is still something missing and you just can not put your finger on it. You know that your home needs something, yet sometimes the only thing it needs, is a quick makeover.

Living Room Makeover

Quick Home Makeover Tips On A Budget

Who said that you can not give your home a quick DIY makeover under a budget? Perhaps that person needs some lessons in the creativity department. You can easily do a quick makeover for your home even if you are on a budget, because all you need are simple additions that can bring a significant amount of style and comfort to your home.

1. Fresh Flowers

You do not have to spend so much on perfect and expensive flowers and you do not have to place them everywhere in the home. Purchase some dull or neutral looking flowers for about $20 and then mix them up with some vibrant fresh flowers and greenery for about $20 as well. You can fill them in a large vase and place it in an empty corner of your living room.

2. Throw Pillows

If your living room seems a little dull, then why not bring life into it by adding some throw pillows? Opt for light colored pillows for a dark room and darker colored pillows for a lighter room. You can also blend in some trendy or vibrant colors to a neutral colored room. Better yet, your visitors will certainly feel comfortable as they lean back on your couch. For as less than $50, you can find two to fours throw pillows depending where you buy them.

Extensive Home Make Over Tips

If you have time and money to spare, you can always splurge on your quick home makeover. These are changes that can last for a longer period of time and you can always mix and match to complement them.

1. Paint

For a more ambitious makeover, you can always create a stunning look in your home with paint. You can choose a more contemporary color if your furnishings are more on the modern side, but you can always stick to neutral if your furnishings have a more rustic appeal. You can also experiment by painting a feature wall, such as the fireplace wall or use color blocking to highlight a certain wall and its decor.

2. Custom Furniture

Another quick makeover option is to have custom furniture or accessories made. Custom pieces can add character to a home and speak about the personality of the people living inside the home. By simply having a few pieces of custom furniture and accessories incorporated into a living room and dining room, you can achieve an artistic environment to entertain visitors and succeed in impressing them with your home.

Curtain'd Window

When thinking about the décor for a room and how to make the most of it, many people won’t really give much thought to the windowsills until the last minute. Often we think in detail about things like where the coffee table should go in relation to the couch, and what colour carpet and wallpaper we want, but will then literally just ‘dump’ a range of left over items onto our windowsills at the end.

It’s no surprise then that often the windowsills are far from the most interesting part of our décor and that often they end up looking cluttered or unattractive. Seeing as your windows are something that can be seen from both inside and outside of the room, this is a decision that should take a lot more time and consideration. Here then we will look at some of the top tips for deciding what to put on your windowsills – you’ll be surprised what a difference it can make to your entire room.

Practicality

Window, Upper St Giles, Norwich

The first thing to think about when choosing items to go on your windowsill is the practicality of having them there. Many of us will have curtains as well as netting on our windows, and will want to be able to reach the handle to let cold air in from time to time. That means we’ll constantly be reaching over our windowsills and rummaging around on them and that any tall or poorly balanced items could easily get knocked over and damaged. If you are going to put items on your windowsill then, ensure that they are resilient enough to survive a fall onto the floor and preferably choose smaller items that aren’t going to get in the way/won’t be liable to fall.

Another consideration here is light, and while the light coming through your window can be very beneficial for your potted plants, it may not be so good for a range of your decorative items and may in fact bleach them over time. If you have anything that has a bold colour and you want to keep it that way – avoid putting it on the windowsill.

Finally, avoid anything on your windowsill that will potentially attract burglars. Remember that anything you put here will essentially be on display to passers by, and you don’t want to put things in temptation’s way if it can be avoided.

Appearance

windowsill

In terms of what looks good on a windowsill it’s definitely normally going to be a matter of ‘less is more’. Clutter this area with lots of different items and it will look busy and crowded and this will mean that none of your items really stand out. On the other hand though, put just a few of your prized possessions on the window sill and you’ll find that they can really make a big impact. Think too about what will look good in this particular position – will people often be facing that window? And will the light from outside enhance them? Crystal items look wonderful in the window for instance as they can refract the light coming through.

Young people might be going through one of the toughest times they have ever faced. If you’re one of them you will know what I’m talking about. You hear all these stories about older people who left college and bought their first house. They probably found their perfect job too, but our housing and employment markets are a complete disaster. For the people who have left college in the last few years it doesn’t seem like your life is going to be easy.

One of the biggest sacrifices people are making is the place they choose (or are forced) to live. Going home and staying with their parents is not an option, or at least not until they are about to be put out on the street. Maybe you have your own little studio apartment, or you might even be renting a room with other friends. You don’t have huge amounts of space and you might feel terrible because of where you live, but hopefully these cool tips will keep you sane until you can afford somewhere better.

Get a Comfortable Mattress

I don’t care if you have a little single bed or a large queen-size bed, but you need to have a comfortable mattress because if you don’t feel great when you go to bed at night you will feel terrible in the morning. Nothing beats waking up with a huge smile on your face because you’ve had a great sleep. You don’t even need to buy a new bed because a mattress will do the job. Don’t buy one online because you need to test it out first to decide if it’s right for you.

Hang Speakers From the Wall

Music makes the world go round and it can turn your frown upside down in a few seconds. When you’re feeling low you can lie on your new mattress and turn the music up to make yourself instantly feel better. When young people listen to music these days it’s either with headphones or on little portable speakers. You will feel a lot better and enjoy the music a lot more if you have proper speakers that are hung from each corner of the room.

Do you Love Coffee?

If you love drinking coffee in the morning it’s a good idea to get your own machine so you can drink as much as you want without spending all your life savings in Starbucks every morning. Can you imagine walking out of the shower and your coffee is already sitting waiting for you? That is what happens when you buy a nice machine. If you want to stick to instant dried that is fine, but just remember that the little joys are what makes the day a much happier one.

Get a Proper Desk

When you live in a compact space it’s very easy to lie on your bed when you are using your laptop. Sooner or later you forget how to type when sitting down and it doesn’t really help your posture. Neither does sitting, but at least you can stand up and move about. It will make you feel a lot better if you have a proper desk to sit at. It is even better getting a comfortable chair to top it off because you won’t be tempted back to bed by your mattress.

Make it Feel More Spacious

Do you know of any techniques to make your room feel bigger than it already is? All you are really doing is trying to trick your subconscious into thinking it’s bigger. Even though it’s not, you will still feel a lot better. The easiest way to do it is by adding more light to the room. Especially natural light so don’t bother closing your curtains until the sun goes down. You can also add a mirror, but only one otherwise your room will look like a gym.

It really is amazing what you can do within the space of four walls. And when you have money to burn – such as a billion dollars with which to build a 27 storey mansion – the sky is quite literally the limit. At least that’s how it was for Mukesh Ambani, who owns the world’s most expensive house. With his own snow room, complete with man-made snow, he might never have to leave his own house next time he wants to go on a skiing holiday, let alone the country. Ambani is not the only person with slightly extravagant taste. It really is amazing what technology allows us to do in our homes these days. Whether it is iPad-controlled utilities, or a fifty-seat home theater. Take a look at this infographic to find out more about some of the coolest features of the world’s most expensive homes.
