Do you ever feel like your home is shrinking a little bit more every year? The four walls seem to be getting physically closer even though that is impossible. Maybe you’ve just been living in the same place for far too long and you need somewhere a bit bigger, or it could be that you’ve bought so much new things over the years without throwing most of the old stuff out. Either way your home isn’t as big as you’d like it to be and if you don’t solve the problem you will have to move out.

The first thing you might end up doing is throwing out a lot of your furniture because you think it will help. Maybe it will, but what if it doesn’t? What will you do if your home needs to be bigger? An easy solution is to turn the basement into a new room and it also happens to be one of the best things you can do. It’s almost the same as moving into a new home that has one extra room. If this is something that interests you we can look into some of the things you should consider.

Sort out the Dampness

Before you can start any work you need to repair the area you are going to be working on otherwise it will cost you more money in the long-run. You won’t appreciate having to put up new walls because water burst through and damage everything. Check very carefully to see if there are cracks appearing on the walls because it’s a sign that water is ready to come through. There also shouldn’t be damp patches and both of these problems need to be fixed before you start anything.

Use the Right Materials

If you’re going to do any work inside the basement the materials you choose could save you a lot of problems. Just because you deal with any signs of leaks before you begin doesn’t mean nothing bad will happen in the future. By using waterproof materials you will prevent any little problems from turning into big disasters. If you’re not carrying out the work yourself make sure the company is doing it right because they might try to save money and you will suffer.

Good Flooring

Your basement floor will be pure concrete and very uncomfortable to walk on. If you were remodeling your living room would you ever use a concrete floor? I don’t think you would, so you shouldn’t leave the basement that way if you’re going to be using the room a lot. The easiest thing you can do is lay some wooden flooring because it’s stylish and a pleasure to walk on. You’re only laying it in one room so it’s not going to be too expensive.

You Need More Light

Basements have a reputation for being dark and dingy because they usually are. It’s not very often you find a basement that has amazing lighting that brightens every corner of the room up, but if someone is living inside your new room or you use it a lot there needs to be adequate lighting. If you only have enough room at the moment for a little light in the middle of the ceiling you will need to call an electrician out so he can work his magic.

Ghastly Ducts and Beams

There is a good chance you will have lots of ducts and beams getting in your way, but luckily you can stop them from looking so ghastly. You just need to make sure they blend in with the rest of the room. That might mean you have to give them a good paint so they match the color of the ceiling, or instead you might want to paint them a completely different color so they stand out, only they will now stand out in a good way.

In the past, garages were primarily meant for vehicle storage. Today, garages serve other purposes as well, such as storage space for old furniture and other unused items that can not be stored inside the house. After all, most garages have wasted space and what better way to make the most of it than by utilizing it for storage space? In fact, there are various storage space solutions that can help you use every bit of wasted space, especially space above the ground. If you have a house without an attic and desperately need storage space, consider your garage that offers convenience, efficiency and security.

Storage Space For Your Car And Other Belongings

Conveniently, cars are not the only belongings you can store in your garage. Since garages have garage doors, you need not have to worry about your other belongings from being damaged or stolen. Just like your car being securely stored, other items can be safely stored too. All you need to do is organize your garage to create designated spaces for easy sorting and retrieval.

Furniture pieces can be covered with thick packing plastics or cardboard boxes and placed at the back of your garage. For smaller items, you can invest in garage storage cabinets and organize your belongings in them. There are also stackable storage cabinets with small and large drawers that you can use if the space in your garage is limited. Simply group your things so you do not need to rummage through everything when you need something in particular. If you really want to be organized, you can also label each cabinet chronologically for easy sorting.

Making Use Of Dead Space

What is dead space? That is the space overhead or above the bonnet of the car. For those with smaller garages, making use of dead space is very convenient. You can look for storage units that are designed especially for such purposes too. They can be hung from the garage’s ceiling, mounted on walls or mounted on legs. The most commonly used storage units are those mounted on adjustable legs to fit the height of the car’s bonnet. These legs can support the shelves as well as boxes you will be using to store your belongings. You can assemble several of these units in your garage to ensure that you do not waste any available space.

Convenient Garage Storage Solutions

Aside from storage cabinets and storage units for dead spaces, you can also opt for other storage solutions. There those created with rails and hanging vertical tracks which can be attached to the wall. These come with brackets that can be clipped into the tracks for adjustable shelves. If you are on a budget, you can install ready-made or old cabinetry on the walls, but you if you prefer to customize your storage space; you can have cabinetry made according to your needs. Hooks and clips are other storage solutions you can use for other items that can be hung.

Garages were invented for additional and safe storage space with cars in mind. But if you have the opportunity to store other belongings, then why not use the space wisely? Just remember to always check your garage door to ensure that it is functioning properly. If you detect a problem with it, have it repaired immediately to avoid getting robbed.

If you are thinking of upgrading your current roof and are unsure of what style you really want, please have a look at this article about metal roofs. You may be surprised to learn some of these important facts about why metal is a great choice for you!

How Are They Installed?

One of the awesome things about a metal roof is that it can be fitted directly onto your current roof system. This is helpful in several ways:

  • You existing roof needn’t be removed and this will make the labor less intensive.
  • You negate any disposal issues and no longer need to pollute your local landfill with the redundant roof material.

Your new metal roof will last much longer than its predecessor and it is completely recyclable as well.  When a roof is removed to make way for a replacement, the home is exposed to the elements until the new one is installed. But the practice of fitting a metal roof without removing your current roof ensures that your home is always covered.

Which Color?

If you opt for a light colored metal roof, you will deflect the sun’s rays and as a result reduce the temperature of your home. The lighter colored roof will also reduce the ambient air temperature indirectly and this reduces the interior temperature.  If you choose a darker shade of metal roof, this will absorb a higher level of solar rays and can reach a very high temperature as a result. A totally white metal roof would reflect much of the solar rays and would only raise temperature a minimal amount.

What About Unsightly Screws?

In days gone by, a metal roof suffered from a bad image thanks to the exterior screws on display. Thankfully the new designs have banished these unattractive features by utilizing new technology.

How About Electric Storms?

It is a common and incorrect myth that a metal rod will attract lightning bolts. Only grounded metal will attract a possible lightning attack. Lightning requires a direct route to  the earth and this is not provided by the ungrounded metal roof you will have installed.

What About Heavy Winds?

In the past, poorly constructed metal roofs have had issues when hit by very strong wind conditions. Nowadays it has been proven that a metal roof can outperform any other material used for roofing. You only have to check out the amount of metal roofs that are used for coastal properties to see that this is true.

How Long Will My Color Last?

Most metal roof manufacturers will only use a recommended paint system panel that will withstand extreme weather and heat conditions. This is usually a ceramic based paint that is baked onto the metal roof panel. This type of paint protection is the best on offer available today, the paint will outlast many manually applied products.

How Will The Roof Affect My Value?

According to the Metal Roofing Association in 2006, the installation of a metal roof will increase the value of your property by over one dollar per square foot. These are facts and should be considered when you are thinking about what material to choose for your next roof.

If you use your garage it’s probably a fairly important structure on your property. You might use it for storage, even putting something as important as your car inside during the winter months, or you could use it as a workshop.

A garage has a large variety of uses, even going so far as to be a place to sit and relax, if you put a couch in it, with some of your friends while enjoying the general outdoorsy feel to it all. Needless to say the structure itself has some importance in your life, and its use is pertinent to your day to day.

Collapsing Garage

Garage Problems Can Be Dangerous

So should something go wrong with your garage it could be potentially disastrous. Maybe in the winter too much snow piles up on top, as is quite common with structures that aren’t quite as reinforced like homes, and it began to buckle in the roof, or the wind in the area is blowing hard and putting a lot of strain against the walls. Weather and time are two nasty things that come together to do some real damage to structures such as a garage, and if they have their way and the garage starts to collapse you could be a whole host of trouble.

A collapsing garage means that the things inside are either damaged or at risk of being damaged. If you store your car in the garage for the winter, for example, and the snow brings the roof down then it’s all going to collapse in on your garage and do some huge damage.

It’s important to keep up on these things and make sure this doesn’t happen, by doing a regular, possibly weekly, inspection of the garage, if possible, and check the structure and supports to make sure they’re all holding out well.

Look for Weaknesses

If you notice a weakness in the garage’s structure, or if the roof starts to sag, or any number of signs that a collapse is imminent then you shouldn’t panic. If you can catch your garage at this level then it’s easily reparable.

There are a variety of solutions you could seek out in order to get it fixed, ranging from complicated long term rebuilds of sections of the garage to something as simple as raising up extra support to keep everything together. It vastly depends on what resources and means you have available and are willing to put into the job.

Try New Support Beam

First and foremost, depending on the area collapsing, you might be able to put up a new support beam. This is only a temporary solution for the most part, but it serves to keep the sagging or collapsing roof up for longer while you get your car out of there and find it somewhere else to store.

If you’re really handy you might be able to make it a long term solution by making sure the support beam is very secure and has proper support on all levels of the garage. It requires a bit more know-how, which is why it’s not always the best solution.

Seek Qualified Help for Permanent Solutions

If you have everything secured temporarily then you can take the time to seek out a better solution to a collapsing garage. Usually this means putting in a new roof, whether it is by yourself or through contractors, and new supports put down to hold it all up and prevent it from happening again.

A way onto the roof to regularly clean it, safely, of snow can also be a major help in preventing collapsing garages as well. Just make sure when dealing with any kind of collapsing structure that you take safety precautions, as it could be quite dangerous.

Do you spend a lot of time in your bedroom at the moment? Some people do spend quite a lot of time in their bedroom and why not? It’s a perfectly good room that can be used for many different things. There are people on the other side of the fence who never go in there unless it’s to go to sleep at night. They think that is all the room is good for and can’t understand why you would use it for anything else.

Maybe they would think differently if they made some cool changes to their bedroom so they actually enjoyed spending time there. If you’re someone who only goes in there to sleep do you think you would use it more if something was different? It’s obvious you won’t need to go in there if you just have a horrible little bed in the corner, so let’s look at some changes you can make that might help you change your mind. It will almost be like having a new room.

Set-up a Computer Corner

If you are used to sitting with your laptop on your knee all the time you might really appreciate your own little mini-office. You will enjoy it so much better when you actually have a desk to lay the laptop on. It gets even better because you can get the most comfortable leather chair you can possible find to sit on. You won’t want to get up once you’ve sat down. Another thing that is cool is the fact you will have drawers, so all your paperwork won’t end up lying around the house.

Build a Balcony

jørn utzon turns 90 today

This one will work out a little more expensive than buying a desk, but when you have a balcony attached to your bedroom you can’t help but spend time there. You can put in some lovely doors that open out and as soon as you wake up in the morning you can go outside to enjoy your morning coffee while reading the paper. This would suit someone much better if they lived in a hotter part of the country because they would get more use out of it.

Buy a More Comfortable Mattress

Something Simple

When you don’t even feel comfortable in your bed you won’t want to lie in it unless you’re going to sleep. That is a shame because if you have a large television inside your room you can go upstairs and watch some TV before it’s time to turn out the lights. It’s also a great way to watch what you want on TV when there are others in the living room watching something you don’t like. Sunday night football springs to mind.

Build a Walk-in Closet

If there is a large closet inside your room it might be better if you turned it into a walk-in closet where you kept all your clothes. It would look great once you took off the door and replaced it with a curtain then you could hang some mirrors from the wall. You might spend a little more time in there getting ready and trying on clothes. Plus you will feel a lot more glamorous getting dressed compared to what you probably do at the moment.

Learn to Relax

Your bedroom can be a safe haven from the daily grind. Whenever you want to relax you can have a lie down and let the stress melt from your head. In order to do that you should try to make the room smell as lovely as possible. This could be achieved by getting some lovely plants and laying them around the room. You could also burn incense sticks or candles, but remember not to fall asleep before they are put out.

Home Water Damage

One of the most annoying things that can ever happen is realizing you have water damage inside your home. No home is ever completely safe and it can happen to anyone. When you notice the first signs of water lying everywhere you’re going to be running around like crazy trying to figure out the best thing to do.

It’s better to know the correct procedure when dealing with it because if you don’t fix it properly there is a good chance it could end up costing you more money than you think. We’re going to now take a look at what you should do, so if you are experiencing problems at the moment you can take care of it properly. If you don’t have any water damage at the moment then please keep it in mind for the future.

1. Make Sure the Area is Safe

Safety is obviously the most important thing you need to take into consideration because rushing in and getting hurt isn’t going to help anyone. Go straight to your power box and kill the electricity as getting electrocuted is going to leave you with more than a sprained ankle. You shouldn’t throw your life on the line to save materialistic possessions. If the water is deep you might also want to check there are no hazards lying in the area you can trip up on.

2. Take out Your Furniture

Before you deal with the water you should take all your furniture away from the damaged area as soon as possible. If the water hasn’t reached anything yet it’s even better because eventually it might, but if your furniture is already wet take it outside and let it air out. It’s too easy to start trying to find out where the water is coming from, but I’m guessing you paid a lot of money for your furniture and you don’t want it to end up ruined.

3. Remove the Flooring

If you want to deal with the problem properly you will have to lift any carpets or linoleum from the floor. There is no way it will be able to dry out properly unless the flooring is lifted and when water damage doesn’t dry properly there is a much greater chance of mold growing. Take it outside and let it dry naturally before it goes back down. If there are any rugs on the floor you can throw them in the washing machine.

4. Dry it Properly

Leaving the puddle for a few days to dry up naturally is a bad idea and it needs to be taken care of as soon as possible. You should use a professional vacuum cleaner which can be hired from somewhere to soak up all the water. Grab a bucket of soap and water to scrub the surrounding areas to make sure everything is nice and clean. Now get as much fans as possible and blast the air onto the damp area until it’s dry. This is important and it will keep mold away.

5. Contact a Plumber

Plumber James

Just because you think the area is fine doesn’t mean the problem is taken care of. There is a good chance the water will come back and it’s equally as likely there could be more damage in places you can’t see. Without a professional coming to take a look you are really taking a big risk. If anything does need to be dealt with straight away the plumber can sort it out. Don’t forget to have your electrical appliances seen to be an electrician before you use them again if they were sitting in water.

Jackie Martinez (#30275)

When you feel like your home is getting too small for your family there is an easy solution that means you don’t need to pack up and move. You could turn your basement into a new room. If your basement is a decent size it’s easy to transform it into anything you want. Some people don’t like this idea because it sounds expensive. The thought of spending more money at the moment while everything is tight just doesn’t sound like a sensible option.

You don’t need to worry because everything is not as dark and gloomy as it seems. There are things you can do to guarantee you don’t end up spending more money than you need to and at the end of the day you still end up with a brand new room. What could possibly go wrong? Just to make sure nothing does, we can look at some things to remember should you wish to carry out any renovations and they will help you save a good amount of money.

Make sure you plan everything

A lot of people spend more money carrying out renovations because they don’t know what they want. They even end up changing their mind half way through and adding extra bits and pieces. If you sit down and work out what you’re trying to do it means you can think of ways to cut costs. If something is going to be too expensive you don’t need to do it and you will know from the start.

Do the work yourself

Venn Collective Studio's Basement

If you get a professional in to carry out the work for you it’s going to cost a lot of money. If you do it yourself you are not paying for anyone’s time and the only thing you will need to buy are the materials. Renovating a basement isn’t a very hard thing to do if you have some DIY experience and you could even try to rope in a few friends at the weekend that do know what they are doing. You might only need to hire a professional for dealing with the electricity or plumbing.

Take proper measurements

Paying for materials is going to be your biggest expense if you are carrying out the work yourself. Do you know how many people end up with far more material than they actually need? Just about the same amount of people that end up with far too little and it’s because they don’t take proper measurements. Know exactly how much of everything you need before you go to the store and it will save you money. Even buying too little the first time around might cost you if you get a discount with a bulk order.

Stop when you see moisture

Because your basement could suffer from water damage you will need to waterproof the walls before doing anything. It’s also important to check for cracks and dampness because if they are visible you will have water damage in the future. That means it will cost you even more money having to do everything again. Don’t start working on your basement until you are absolutely sure there are no signs of water damage and you’ll save yourself a headache.

Buy secondhand materials

When you’re buying furniture for the new room there is no reason why it has to be brand new. You could easily pick up some great secondhand bargains because people have decided they don’t want them anymore. This alone could save you thousands of dollars and the quality of furniture you’re buying could be just as good as anything you’d get new from the store. Just be careful taken secondhand wood into your home and have it treated first.

Ceiling Fan CleaningOwning a ceiling fan can be very beneficial. Not only is a cool addition to any room, it can help reduce power consumption significantly. However, to get the most out of your ceiling fan, it has to be maintained regularly. Here are 5 important maintenance tips for ceiling fans.

Don’t skimp on the oil

A ceiling fan is a machine with many moving parts. Compared to other machines out there, a ceiling fan seems like a simple piece of technology. However, it does not mean you can ignore having a regular maintenance schedule for it. Wherever there are moving parts, there is always going to be friction; it is a scientific fact and ceiling fans are not immune to the laws of physics. Proper lubrication is needed to ensure that friction is at a minimum and does not cause wear and tear on the moving parts. You can use any generic lubricating oil available at home improvement stores. Just be careful to keep the oil away from the electrical wiring. If you have an older ceiling fan, you may have to use grease on certain parts, such as the rubber flywheel.

Think furniture polish is just for furniture? Think again

Furniture polish is great for protecting your wooden furniture and making it look good. Turns out, it’s just as good for your ceiling fan. A layer of furniture polish will prevent dust from sticking to the fan blades. It also provides a nice gleaming coat that makes the ceiling fan look good. Usually, furniture polish is completely safe to be used on materials used to construct fans. However, it is still recommended that you test the polish on a small area before proceeding to polish the rest of the fan; a small sample area on the back of a fan blade should be ideal. For older cast-iron fans, do not forget to apply a coat of anti-rust.

Fan maintenance? The screwdriver is your friend

When it comes to fan maintenance, the screwdriver is definitely the most useful tool in our toolbox. You are going to have to unscrew a number of fasteners to remove the housing and oil the moving parts. Modern ceiling fans are designed for aesthetic perfection and you might have to end up using more than one type of screwdriver to get the job done. Simple wrapping a rag over the pointy end of a screwdriver can also let you access and clean some of the hard-to-reach places in the fan’s motor housing case. Use the screwdriver to tighten the screws that hold the fan blades in place.

Invest in a balancing kit

When your fan starts wobbling like a drunkard, it can become a real nuisance. Not only is it very noisy, it is a legitimate safety hazard. Wobbling is usually caused due to a lack of balance, especially in the blades. The solution to this is to invest in a balancing kit. Fan balancing kits are available in any home improvement stores and come with instructions simple enough for any homeowner to use.

Don’t underestimate the importance of dusting

A simple thing like regular dusting goes a long way to ensure that you ceiling fan works perfectly for a long time to come. If you have very high ceilings, you can always use the extender attachment on your vacuum cleaner to get the job done. All vacuum cleaners come with a special attachment to clean curtains; the same attachment is good enough for the job to clean ceiling fans.

Follow these 5 important tips and your ceiling fans will work great and look god for a very long time.

Home improvement is a never-ending process: the cleaning, the organizing, and the room design are all important duties to think about. Slacking in one area can directly affect other aspects of your home-improvement. This is why it’s imperative that you do what you can, when you can, with what you have and find ways to make keeping your home the way you want it simple.

Taking Note of the Small Picture versus Big Picture

When prepping for any project, whether it involves an entire home or a single bedroom, there are many things to take into consideration. While it can be very easy to get caught up in the stress of any given task as a whole, sometimes breaking things down into smaller pieces is the better way to go. For example, building that new bookshelf for your child’s bedroom may not mean a completely decorated room quite yet but it’s a great starting point. No matter how minor each project may seem, removing anything from your to-do list feels great. Another perfect example of such a case would be adding a new back splash in order to better protect your walls from damage, keeping them nicer, longer. Preventive additions (things that are going to help maintain the area you have worked so hard on) are wonderful because they have long-lasting effects.

Cleaning and Organizing on a Consistent Basis

24. Le dernier mot

Cleaning is an important aspect of any home and one of the most simple, yet never-ending tasks. The job of cleaning has no expiration date. We are constantly picking up after our children, pets and guests. The longer we wait to clean, the bigger our to-do list becomes.

Organizing and cleaning go hand in hand. Having paperwork, toys, books, etc in locations that make sense is not only going to improve the look of a space, but this is also going to make finding things a breeze. Ever ran around your home trying to find your car keys or your child’s favorite teddy bear? These types of stresses can be kept to a minimum when you clean and organize what you see, when you first see it, as much as you possibly can.

Putting More Focus on High-Traffic Areas

Kitchen Hallway

One of the most easily dirtied areas of any home is the kitchen. Not only does food preparation and excessive foot traffic cause physical messes but with it being one of the most active areas in a home, it can seem next to impossible to keep tidy. Pantries are one of the trickiest areas to keep neat. You may want to consider adding a spice rack, or spinning carousel to keep certain food items in easier-to-spot locations. Hanging some of your favorite cups can also save quite a bit of cupboard and counter space.

Creating a Comfortable Environment

There is nothing better than coming home to an atmosphere that looks great, smells great and feels great. Whether you have a few thousand dollars to spend on your improvements, a few hundred or less than a hundred, there are things you can do. Even with zero money set aside for improvement purposes, you can still make changes that will greatly benefit your family. For instance, moving that file cabinet that you have old paperwork stored in and adding your current bills or office notes to it could help you clean off that overloaded desk, giving you more space to work with. Many of us tend to try to keep everything over the years, but it never hurts to go through the things you have and decide what you truly need and what you could live without.

Adding Little Comforts, Affordably

Not have enough money or time to paint your living room and sick of its current look? Maybe all you need are a few family photos put up around the space for now to give you something fresh and new to look at. What about those projects your children made at school? Those would probably look fantastic on the walls. Keep in mind; you don’t necessarily need to paint the entire area. An accent wall or even a strip of paint can really give new life to an area. New and improved colors have a way of bringing everything in a room together, not just in the form of paint but decorations, as well.

Selling your home can be tough, especially in the current market. The element of increased competition due to the slow market conditions, means that anything you can do to make your home more sale worth matters.

Of course, there are a number of things that you can do with the interior of your home that will allow you to improve your prospects and get a higher price for your house, and more importantly sell it faster.

Home Improvement Tips

Basement

If your home has a basement then you want to ensure that it’s as warm and dry as it can be. Wet or musty basements are trouble and can cause the worst of impressions thanks to the smell and conditions at hand. However, most of the solutions are easy and can be fixed easily. It’s usually simple things like improper grade draining or roof downspout discharge that causes damp and these are easily fixed and then dried out with a dehumidifier.

Waste Line Drainage

Slow or staggered draining sinks or tubs are going to cause issues and are very noticeable. They will also put potential buyers off and if not that those that arrive to do the housing inspection. They can be cleared quite easily usually, meaning full service can resume and you can sell your home that little bit faster.

Garbage Disposal

If the person looking at the house doesn’t take a look at the garbage disposal, the person doing the house report most certainly will. Make sure that it’s free flowing and working well to prevent any issues and if not get a professional to take a look or hire some tools from a company that offers the best at hire in your area.

Electrical Panel

One of the biggest and most obvious issues that will turn people off a home is a poorly maintained circuit or electrical panel. If the panel looks badly maintained, there are tripped circuit breakers or popped fuses you are in trouble. Get an electrician in to sort out the issue and you may even need a new panel – so, prepare for the cost. This is not something you should tamper with alone, so get professional help.

Drywall

Drywall problems are clear to see and problems such as holes are cosmetic but will put people off buying. Small children may cause problems of this kind, however that’s no excuse and you will need to fix them before viewings.

Paint

Old or dirty paint will take the sheen off your home and will take money off the price and add time to how long it takes to sell the residence. Painting is easy to do and can really add to your home’s price and the first impressions it makes – so give it a lick.

Follow these tips and you’ll speed up the sale and also increase the price of the home.
