It shows that people moved for the following reasons: Job change, a better home, a more affordable home, family changes, and just American mobility. It shows that the number of people who move for a better home is on the decline, but the number of people who move to more affordable homes is on the rise. The “American Mobility” section shows that metropolitan population is on the decline, while the number of those who choose the suburbs is going up. It also displays the top 10 state-to-state moves in 2010. 6.7 million people moved to a different state. California to Texas is number one, New York to Florida is number two, and Florida go Georgia is number three. The data was taken from the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Association of Realtors.

Moving with Pets: How to Keep Your Furry Companions Infographic

In the United States we really love our pets. From the moment they enter our homes we treat them like they are our children. We feed them, cuddle with them and often even dress them (but who knows how they feel about that?) Unfortunately, many landlords and condo associations don’t allow pets and, sadly, that leaves many cats and dogs out in the cold.

Too many people are forced to abandon their pets when they move to a new home. We asked our readers if they were able to take their pets with them the last time that they moved. We learned that many movers are forced to leave their pets at shelters because their new landlord doesn’t allow cats and dogs, their new roommates are allergic or their new apartment isn’t a good home for an animal.

You have made it through the whirlwind excitement of buying a house. You have finally closed and the house is yours. Like so many other home buyers, you are likely now standing in a quiet, empty house, wondering what to do next. Of course, you have a list as long as your arm of plans for moving in, arranging, and interior decorating, but there are a few important purchases that must be made first.

Door Knobs

New door knobs“>door knobs are a must. You do not know if someone else has a key to the current locks, and security is very important. By replacing all of the door knobs, you can ensure that there are no other keys floating out there and no one who can simply walk into your home at will. Door knobs are reasonably priced and can be found at any home improvement store, and they are easily installed in an afternoon.

Window Treatments

By hanging curtains or blinds, you can hide from the world around you that the house is empty or that you have started moving in. With window treatments and a few lights, it is impossible to know if someone is in the house or not, so if you have not yet moved in, your property is better protected.

Appliances

Now is the time, while the house is relatively empty, to plug in and test the appliances. If the refrigerator, stove, washer, or dryer needs to be replaced, this is much easier to do without the rest of your belongings in the home. Depending on your local climate and the season of your move, you will want to have lawn care or snow removal equipment on the premises right away. The city ordinances are clear that removing snow from your driveway and sidewalks and keeping your lawn neat and trimmed are required of each home owner, even if you have not yet moved in. You will want the necessary equipment on hand immediately upon taking possession of your house.

Tools

If you are a first time home owner, your tool box may hold only a screwdriver and a hammer. As you take possession of your new home, you will certainly need to stock up on a few more tools so you are readily able to make necessary repairs. A well stocked tool box can greatly diminish any repair emergency.

Have you decided to sell your house? To get the best possible price for your house you must sell it at the right time. It is impossible even for professionals to predict market trends accurately but often real estate markets have certain seasons when sales are at their peaks. Putting your house for sale at the right time can be crucial also because you do not want to keep your house in the market for too long without being sold. People tend to suspect something is wrong if the house remains on the market too long and your potential offers may come in lower than expected. Agents’ interests too will wear with time.

What is the best season to sell?

Summer and spring are usually considered to be the best seasons for selling your house and winter the worst. But putting up your house for sale in winter time has its advantages. You have much less competition. You can play up the decorations you may have made for Christmas or New Year and get a high price from the buyer. It is also a good time to close the deal in a short time as buyer would want to close the deal before the New Year.Seasonal trends also sometimes vary from place to place depending, sometimes, on climatic conditions. Due to school holidays, and many clubs also having a summer break, the summer vacation period is a popular time for moving to a new area. It is often an extremely busy time for state to state moving companies. Of course, there are always concerns with a move. As well as the practical aspects of packing up your old home and moving to a new one, there are things such as helping the children to adapt to their new surroundings and preparing them for starting at a new school which also need to be addressed. Some kids may find this an easy period, while others may find it more challenging. Following, you will find some tips to make the transition to a new residence and a new place of study less stressful for you and your children.

Building Excitement

Getting your kids worked up and excited, in a good way, about the move to a new school can be one of the best ways to deal with the changes that are coming. Buying new school supplies is always a good start when moving to a new school, especially since most classrooms vary a bit as to what they want your children to have. Some of these things are necessary purchases; but if you generate some excitement by turning it into a shopping spree, it may well rub off on the kids. Buying a brand new backpack, some new pencils, and perhaps some new clothes will help them feel more confident when heading off to a new school even if they are worried.

Get Familiar

Another good idea can be to get with the school or school officials to plan a day to take the kids for a tour before they start. This is not usually a problem for the school, and can be very beneficial, as the children will have a head start on their first day feeling more comfortable with their new surroundings. If it is possible, organize this tour before the school year starts. Make sure that you consider the need for this tour, as to build some familiarity with the place before your children begin attending classes there, when you are setting up your moving schedule.

Be There and Communicate

Finally, and probably most importantly, let your kids know that you are there for them to confide in if they have any issues with the move. It can be very daunting, even overwhelming for children, to move not only to a new city and a new home, but to a whole new school environment as well. As the parent, you can smooth the way for them as much as possible by taking steps to put their minds at rest and assist them with all the adjustments they will need to make. In this way, they will hopefully settle in to their new environment quickly and with as little stress as possible.

Do You Really Need That? (Tips Before Moving In)

Figuring out what you need can be hard. A lot of us get so used to having certain luxuries that we find it difficult to picture a life without them or we become so attached to items that we lie to ourselves and come up with excuses for why we should keep ‘this’ or keep ‘that’. While the process of determining the difference between your ‘wants’ and ‘needs’ isn’t exactly an easy task because changing how you think can take many months, if not years; here are some tips to get you started. In the beginning, it is going to be a bit tricky, however, in time it becomes much easier; second nature, even. You’ll get there!

Ask Yourself How Often You Use It

One of the first things you should do whenever you are moving into a new home is go through everything you own one item at a time. This is the perfect time (since you have to move everything, anyway) to literally go through everything you own and figure out what you want and actually need and what you don’t need. If you find yourself having a hard time letting go of certain objects; take a moment to ask yourself a few questions about it:

How badly would you miss it if it was gone? When was the last time you used it? How often do you picture yourself using the said item in the near future? Be honest with yourself (although we know it’s tough!) and you are going to end up with a much cleaner home from the get-go. Moving is even better than spring cleaning because you are able to do a much more in-depth look at everything you have. Taking inventory is going to be much easier this way.

The More Room You Have, the Better

There is nothing quite like having a lot of space to store your prized possessions. When a house is cluttered, all of your favorite things can easily get lost in the shuffle but when you clear out the things you don’t need; you’re able to actually enjoy the things you do keep and put them on display for others to enjoy, as well. This may be pictures, trophies, awards or other personal items such as knick knacks that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Just Because You Don’t Need it, Doesn’t Mean Someone Else Can’t

Try not to get too upset over the items that you can’t keep. You don’t necessarily need to throw them away and a lot of the time there are going to be people who want them just as badly as you thought you did in the beginning. Even if you have something that you think may be of no use to someone, it is never going to hurt to put said item on Craig’s List and see if you can’t make a profit. You can even choose to give items away or donate them to local charities so those in need can enjoy something new.
